Science Communication & Outreach

I am very active in science communication and outreach, and I have been involved in many different activities and given talks for different audiences. I highlight here a few events/initiatives that I am ot I've recently been part of:

Pint of Science Spain 2024

Six years after my first talk at the Pint of Science festival in Antwerp (Belgium), I have been invited to participate in my new town, and I am super excited! I will talk about stars and about how they make the stuff we are made of.

Amigos del IAC en Tacoronte

Amigos del IAC is a program led by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias that aims at bringing the science done in the institute and the citizens closer. One of their initiatives involves organising astronomy lectures, and I was the lecturer of one last April.

Habla con ellas: Mujeres en Astronomía

An initiative from the Institute of Astronomy of the Canary Islands that gives female astronomers visibility while offering young students new role models in scientific and technical fields. The programme organises video calls in which we explain our work and our science projects at schools and high schools in Spain.

Hable con Ellas IAC

Co-host of ESO's 60th anniversary virtual tour

This virtual tour was part of a campaign to mark the 60th birthday of the European Southern Observatory. Under the motto “Feet on the ground, eyes on the sky”, ESO organised several activities focusing on building on their legacy to continue the success story of international collaboration in astronomy. As part of this campaign, this 1-h broadcast tried to highlight the work done in the different sites. I co-hosted the event from the Paranal Observatory and explained how astronomers work at observatories and why these are in the desert.

Astronomía al Parque

As part of the National Astronomy Day in Chile and with the support of the ESO Chile's communication team, I co-organised an event that brought ESO scientists to a park to talk about astronomy and answer astronomy questions from our visitors.

"Astronomía en vivo" - Live astronomy
from Paranal Observatory

This event showed live for the first time how the Very Large Telescope operates from the moment the domes open, in the Atacama Desert, until an image is available on a screen in the control room. An engineer, a telescope operator, and an astronomer (me!) joined forces to observe the Orion Nebula with FORS2, in UT1, and answer many questions from the audience about this amazing process.

Pint of Science and Couch of Science

I was heavily involved in Pint of Science Belgium for several years. I started as a speaker in the 2018 edition in Antwerp, but in 2019, I became part of the Leuven team as Event Organizer. In 2020, I was the City Coordinator of Pint of Science Leuven, but since the pandemic made us cancel the festival, we created and hosted Couch of Science, a YouTube Channel that offered weekly science talks from home for months.

Science Figured Out

Science Figured Out is an initiative of SciMingo, a non-profit organisation to promote science and technology in Flanders and bring science closer to the citizens. I participated in 2020 and presented my PhD in a short and accessible pitch.

- I am a member of the Editorial Board of the Spanish Edition of astroEDU, an open-access award-winning platform hosted by the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education.

- I have contributed to NASA’s Universe of Learning as a Subject-Matter Expert in Stellar Evolution and content reviewer.

- I've participated actively in Skype a Scientist.

Other highlighted outreach talks

- Invited speaker at the Casa de las Ciencias in Logroño to commemorate World Space Week.

- Invited by the Spanish Embassy in Chile to give an outreach talk about “Cosmic dances” at the Spanish Cultural Center in Santiago.

- Invited speaker at a Talk Cosmic To Me event.
